As members of the NWMBA and the larger community, we hear global and grandious talk about shopping locally as a means of reducing our carbon foot print. We talk about livability issues in regard to crime and litter while neglecting the conversation about the ability to shop in our own neighborhood. Not enough “there” there?
According to some studies, for every $100 you spend in locally independent stores, $68 returns through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain and/or outside your local area, $43 or even less in some cases stays here. Shopping online (unless it is a local store) means nothing comes home. As you read through our NWMBA directory I encourage you to take a sixty day challenge. Over the next sixty days, try shopping locally at every possible NWMBA member listed in our directory. Or for every dollar you spend outside the neighborhood try spending two in the community and see what changes you notice. Take the challenge! We want to hear about it!
Let’s remember our connection and unleash the power to change our own community!
Thank you, Duane A. Atter, NWMBA President
